Here at Cathays all our courses are run by Youth and Community Workers, and which means we are here for you. Our teaching process is designed so that we can change and be flexible about what and how we teach, depending on your needs.

NOCN Entry Level 3 Independent Living – Looking After Yourself and Your Home
This is primarily aimed for individuals aged 18-26, with a disability and/or ASD who are seeking to move into their own accommodation, although other applications will be considered.
All days are run 10 4 including flexible break times, and break out activities, such as music and gardening.
Group sizes are no more than 10, and are supported by qualified Youth and Community workers.
There are 6 enrollment options for taking part in this course, as listed below. NB. If the course enrollment has past the information will be crossed out, however starting September 2018 the same courses will be starting again with similar dates.
- Annual Course 1 – Monday Only September start
- Annual Course 2 – Wednesday Only September start
- Annual Course 3 – Monday Only February start
- Annual Course 4 – Wednesday Only February start
- Fast track – September
- Fast track – February
Each course has the same content made of 7 units, Looking After Yourself and Your Home, Understanding Relationships, Developing Assertiveness, Personal Care and Hygiene, Using Domestic Appliances, Personal Safety, and Make a Simple Meal.
Minimum 50% attendance is required to pass each unit.
Due to this being an accredited course each learner is required to attend a registration appointment, during this appointment each learner will also undergo a basic reading and writing activity to assess their level of support need.
Additional topics covered
First aid, food hygiene, intimate relationships, oral hygiene, fire/police, budgeting, careers, nutrition.
Cost per learner
All courses contain 7 units, at a cost of £22 per day totaling £726 for Fast track courses and £770 Annual courses, which is payable even if the learner does not attend. Referrals and Payments can be direct or from a third party organisation, for example Cardiff Council.

Agored Cymru Level 2 Extended Award in Work Related Education
We offer volunteering placements and accreditation for people 18-24 in Cardiff, that are unemployed and face barriers to employment / learning. We tailor the placements to the participant’s needs as we understand that everyone has different goals, experiences and skills. Placements are available across the different departments within our centre, ensuring our participants access an authentic, immersive, and wide range of work related experience.
Participants will gain Agored Cymru Level 2 Work Related Education through volunteering while receiving support from specialist mentors. They will also have access to support for CV writing and identifying further work, education and/or learning opportunities. We are currently taking referrals for our first intake of participants, which starts on the 16th of April.
Placements last for 5 weeks – 5 hours per week work experience, and 5 hours per week learning time.
The project is for 18-24 year olds, living in Cardiff and not currently in work.

- I’ve been to college, what’s the difference?We like to start with you.
- Although there is a curriculum like college, we can be flexible and get to the end goal in the way that suits you.
- The classes are smaller, and building isn’t as big (answered by Jason)
- But it’ll be boring…
- We don’t like teaching boring, so we try not to make the sessions boring. We do lots of different things outside of the classroom, as well as in. We also ask for regular feedback, so free to tell us if you think we are being boring.
- No, doesn’t make sense to me. The teachers are fun, we have free choice after break (answered by Jason and Victoria)
- Do I have to come every day?
- The Independent Living course is designed so it can be flexible. You can either come 2 days a week for 6 months, or 1 day a week for 12 months.
- Work related education is 2 days a week for 5 weeks – this is a work based qualification therefore you will have to be in everyday you have enrolled for.
- We are all very approachable, if you are struggling to attend any course, for any reason please talk to any of your tutors to see if we can help.
